Counselling and Psychotherapy
“Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
Brene Brown

Lynda Wakefield
I have worked with a wide variety of adults and young people for nearly 20 years locally and internationally to improve their quality of life by improving mental health, reducing isolation and increasing their participation in their communities and society.
It was during this time that my passion for personal development and wellbeing became ignited. I have gained qualifications in Social Science, Yoga Teacher Training, Somatic Experiencing and Community Development amongst others. This led to my pursuance of a Masters of Science in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy and more recently a Diploma in Trauma Informed Psychotherapy.
My desire to help others to live the lives they wish for and deserve, continues to drive and inspire my work.

What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling is generally a shorter-term, more focused approach, often addressing specific issues or challenges. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is usually a longer-term, in-depth process that delves into underlying patterns, beliefs, and experiences to promote deeper personal growth

Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for you to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns. Your therapist will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and of others.
A therapist will not give you their opinions or advice or prescribe medication. They will help you find your own solutions – whether that is making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems.
Counselling and psychotherapy can take different forms depending on your needs and what type of therapy may be suitable.
Most therapy takes place in planned, regular sessions which last for around 50 minutes. How often you see your therapist and how many appointments you have will depend on your individual circumstances, and will be agreed between you and your therapist.
During a session, your therapist may take you through specific exercises designed to help with your problem, or you might have more general discussions about how you are feeling. What you talk about will vary depend on what you want help with and the therapist’s approach. It could include:
-
your relationships
-
your childhood
-
your feelings, emotions or thoughts
-
your behaviour
-
past and present life events
-
situations you find difficult
Your therapist will be impartial but understanding. They will listen to you without judgment and help you explore your thoughts and emotions. They may offer information, but they will not tell you what you should think or do.

My Therapy Approach
I provide non- judgemental psychotherapy and counselling services to adults, both in-person (held in Cork City) and online. Counselling and psychotherapy are talking therapies to explore what is going on in a person’s life. We will work together to help you to work through what you are struggling with so that you can create change. Therapy is a powerful way to change what you are finding difficult to find emotional balance and overcome problems. I incorporate many therapy styles in my work, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centred Therapy, Attachment Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Trauma Informed therapy, amongst others.
There is no one size fits all and I will draw on my twenty years experience working with people to help you to improve your life.
